Float Ratings

We are pleased to offer you the flying experience of your life, first class floatplane training in an area with beauty that is second to none. Imagine the thrill of earning your floatplane endorsement on our tidal rivers, open bays, and endless miles of unspoiled coastline. This is coastal flying at its best.

Our floatplane endorsement course involves 7 hours of time in the aircraft and covers docking, taxiing, sailing, roughwater operations, glassywater operations, crosswinds and normal operations as well as items that relate specifically to flying in an ocean environment. We conduct our courses so that they take us all over Prince Edward Island, giving you the student the greatest variety of different situations and conditions, we are also only 20 minutes from Cape Breton and its many fresh water lakes and bays. All required ground briefing time is included. Additional time and instruction is available for those students wanting to pursue a career in floatplanes or for those that just can't get enough of this type of flying and adventure.

Training is conducted on our well equipped and meticulously maintained 1972 Cessna 172 aircraft equipped with a 170hp. This aircraft is a perfect floatplane training platform and offers the familiarity inside (location of instruments, engine controls, etc.) that pilots appreciate when learning to fly floats.

Accommodations...

While training with us your accomodations are included in your endorsement cost. The endorsement normally takes only 2 days to complete (one night), but occasionally inclement weather forces us to take a slightly longer amount of time. As long as you are training with us you stay with us in our spacious home. If you are traveling with a companion please notify us prior to your arrival.

Cost...

The price of our floatplane course this year (2008) is $1495 CDN (group rates available - 2 or more) and accomodations are included. Additional time is available for $190 per hour. Block time discounts are available, please contact us for more information.

Getting here...

Tartan Air is located in the scenic fishing village of Murray River, located in the southeastern corner of Prince Edward Island (20nm SE of Charlottetown, CYYG). Air Canada has several flights daily into the Charlottetown airport year around, in summer months other airlines also serve Prince Edward Island. For those of you wishing to fly yourselves here the Prince Edward Island Flying Association has a large general aviation area with ample parking, fuel and a full service Approved Maintenance Organization (owned by Tartan Air). Free pickup is available to those students who arrive at the Charlottetown airport.

For those students wishing to drive to our location we are located 1 hour and 20 minutes from the Confederation Bridge, or 10 minutes from the Wood Island ferry that connects Nova Scotia to Prince Edward Island. We will also pick students up at the ferry terminal if required. Please contact us for more information on where we are located and the best method of arriving here.

Additional Information...

Foreign pilots are always welcome, all that is required is that you receive a visitors pilots licence (valid for 90 days) and the floatplane endorsement will be applied to that Canadian licence. Once you return to your country of origin simply go into your local aviation authority and they will transfer your seaplane endorsement onto your permanent licence. In Canada no flight test is required to earn a floatplane endorsement. Minimum requirement is a ICAO recognized Private Pilot Licence. Please contact us for more information.
